England's first National Park is traditionally split into two areas, known as the Dark and White Peak - the Dark Peak's ruggedly beautiful high gritstone moorlands and the broad shale valleys in the north contrasting with the rolling farmland and steep-sided dales of the lighter limestone White Peak to the south.
